The Holy Shroud prayer is one of the most intense expressions of Christian faith, born from the contemplation of the Passion and the suffering face of Jesus Christ. Linked to the devotion of the Holy Face, this prayer was especially spread by Saint Thérèse of the Child Jesus, who found in it an inexhaustible source of spiritual inspiration.

Throughout history, the Shroud of Turin has also helped to strengthen this devotional practice, as it is considered by many faithful to be the cloth that wrapped the body of Christ after the crucifixion.

In this article, we will explore in depth the Holy Shroud prayer, presenting two versions of the text (the traditional one by Saint Thérèse and a second, contemporary devotional version), as well as reflecting on its origin, meaning, biblical connection, spirituality, and how it remains alive in the Church today.

O Jesus, who in Your most cruel Passion became “the reproach of men and the Man of Sorrows,” I adore Your Divine Face upon which shine the beauty and tenderness of the divinity, which has now become for me like the face of a “leper” (Is 53:4).

But beneath these disfigured features, I recognize Your infinite love and ardently desire to love You and to make You loved by all people.

The tears that flowed so abundantly from Your eyes seem to me like precious pearls, which I would like to gather so that, by their infinite worth, I may ransom the souls of poor sinners.

O Jesus, Your Face is the only beauty that enchants my heart. Willingly I wish to renounce on earth the sweetness of Your gaze and the ineffable kiss of Your divine mouth; but I beg You: imprint Your divine image upon my heart and inflame me with Your love, so that I may one day contemplate Your glorious Face in heaven.

Amen!

Divine Jesus, I adore you in the Holy Shroud in which you were wrapped after your sacrifice for us. May I always be strengthened by the remembrance of your love and never stray from your presence.

Amen!

The Holy Shroud prayer has its roots in the devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus, which gained strength in the 19th century and became even more popular thanks to the spirituality of Saint Thérèse.

For her, contemplating the face of Christ disfigured by the Passion was to plunge into the mystery of redeeming love. Her prayer, simple and profound, began to be recited by thousands of faithful in convents, parishes, and Christian homes.

Quick Summary
